Although this new form of protest soon turned into a crisis, it became an important lesson for the protesters. Compared to the tension inside the airport terminal, the long walk home at sunset on the Lantau highway, which connects the Hong Kong International Airport to the residential areas, felt like a reminiscence of a school field trip.
Described in the 70’s as "A Chorus Line for gay people," Crimes Against Nature remains vital today as a communal disclosure of roles that gay people adopt in order to survive in a world that devalues homosexual feelings. It features individual actors delivering revealing monologues, during which the other members of the collective play background roles (parents, schoolmates, etc.). Femicides are not isolated incidents. They are part of a broader pattern of violence against women, often driven by deeply ingrained misogyny; as well as violence towards men. All which are occurring more often than we might think. Often the media reduces victims' stories to shocking headlines, disregarding the warning signs, and the failures within a society that allow such tragedies to persist. We need to break the silence surrounding violence against women and men, and through this documentary, I hope to shed light not only on the past crimes of the Athens Ripper, but also on the issue of sexual assault that is occurring, right at our front door.
