Cut Adrift

"Cut Adrift" marks Anastasia Wlaschin-Wiest's directorial debut, delving into the educational challenges on England's Isle of Wight. Raised on the island, Anastasia witnessed the shortcomings of its education system, exacerbated by restructuring in 2011. Despite its proximity to the mainland, the island remains isolated, impacting young perspectives. With below-average results, school closures, and underfunding prevalent, Anastasia's documentary aims to spark discussion and drive positive change. Returning as a recent graduate, she interviews locals to understand the issues and propose solutions. "Cut Adrift" is a poignant call to action, urging for improved educational opportunities and broader horizons for the island's youth.

Vol 2 - Rails on the Isle of Wight

Island railways have a particular fascination, none more so than those on the Isle of Wight. In this programme, produced from films made by railway enthusiasts who visited the island from the 1950s to the present day, we present aspects of the changing face of the island s railways over the last forty years. We begin with John Laird s 1964 films of the steam railway in all its glory with the coverage of the lines to Ventnor and Cowes. This is contrasted with the scene in the 1950s as portrayed in rare colour films made in 1953 on the soon to be closed lines from Brading to Bembridge, Sandown to Merstone and Newport and from Newport to Freshwater. The final steam sequences filmed by Geoff Todd and Derek Norman show the last years of steam operation on the island and the preparations for electrification. The Isle of Wight s new tube trains are shown at first on trial on the mainland, looking quite incongruous at locations such as Clapham Junction.

The Wonder Ring

An important early film by Stan Brakhage, which Joseph Cornell commissioned as a record of New York's Third Avenue elevated train before it was torn down. Curiously lacking in people, the film focuses on the rhythms of the ride and reflections in train windows, finding a real-world version of the superimpositions Brakhage would later create in the lab. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2005.

There was once, in 1910, a train able to cross the wild territories between Argentina and Chile, making possible a mythical journey, joining two oceans with a single ticket, from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso. The last trip of the BAP was in 1979; in the nineties, its various branches were permanently abandoned. Since then, travelers have been inhabiting the railway landscape as they dream, desire, remember or yearn: as part of their own being and national history.

A Swiss tourist named Stella meets Christophe, a French drifter, on a Greyhound bus traveling from Chicago to San Francisco. In time, she gets a job as a cashier in a postcard shop, while he parks cars at an expensive restaurant. Stella dreams of going to Japan and singing in clubs, while Christophe wants to explore “the Wild West” he imagines from the American movies of his childhood. The couple befriends Maria, a bisexual Italian immigrant who works in the kitchen at Christophe’s restaurant. In their spare time, the three foreigners complain about their low-wage jobs, criticize Americans, and dream of going someplace else. After Christophe is fired from his valet job, an incoming customer hands him the keys to his car. Christophe takes the vehicle and convinces Stella and Maria to flee with him to New Orleans, Louisiana, and the trio embarks on a new adventure.

The Train

As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France's greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.
