Classical music doesn’t exactly have a reputation for being hip. For too long it’s been seen as a stuffy genre for the high cultured elite. WHAT WOULD BEETHOVEN DO? follows a number of renegades, from composers flirting with modern mediums, to young musicians dedicated to changing the narrative, to a man who’s bringing turntablists and orchestras together. Notable artists such as, Bobby McFerrin, Benjamin Zander and Eric Whitacre add their voices to the debate about why classical music is still relevant today.

The Waldbühne in Berlin, one of the most appealing outdoor amphitheatres on the European continent, is the home of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s summer concerts. With over 20.000 in attendance, they are some of the most popular classical music concerts in the world. In 2015 the Berliner Philharmoniker surrounded themselves with plenty of celebrities, including not only conductor Sir Simon Rattle, but also many figures from film history: Indiana Jones, Robin Hood, Ben Hur and many more. They were all brought to life musically when the orchestra performed some of Hollywood’s most famous film music. With film music from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T. composed by John Williams. The French orchestra Les Siecles is spoken of exclusively in superlatives. Critics, but above all listeners, highly appreciate the perfect ensemble playing of all sections of the orchestra, the clear range of dynamic differences, and rhythmic precision. Similarly, the conductor and founder of the ensemble, the charismatic François-Xavier Roth, is also highly regarded for his energetic musicality, clear gestures, and understanding of the genre he interprets. They came to Prague for the Prague Spring 2022 festival with pianist Bertrand Chamaya and a purely French repertoire. They performed works by César Franck and Claude Debussy and completely captivated the audience in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum. Les Siecles is sure to win you over as well.

Smetanova Litomyšl 2023 – slavnostní zahajovací koncert

Performed by pianist Kirill Gerstein and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Tomáš Netopil, the concert will feature compositions by Smetana, Rachmaninoff, and Dvořák. Due to the renovation of Litomyšl Castle, the concert will take place in the Festival Hall, which was nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in 2007.

B. Britten's famous opera, which became a major theatrical event in its production by the National Theater Brno... The story of the opera Peter Grimes is as harsh and stormy as the landscape in which it takes place. A boy dies in a fishing village on the North Sea coast. Fisherman Peter Grimes is suspected of his murder. Although he is acquitted by the court, the locals have their own opinion and make it known. Social outcasts and the sea are the thematic pillars of this tragic opera, in which the staunch pacifist and humanist Benjamin Britten sides with all those who deviate from the norms of mainstream society. Although Benjamin Britten's work forms a fundamental part of contemporary opera production and he is the most frequently staged composer of the 20th century worldwide, in the Czech Republic we rarely have the opportunity to encounter his work. His most famous opera, Peter Grimes, from 1945, had its Czechoslovak premiere two years later at the National Theater in Brno.

Claudio Abbado: The Last Concert

This was recorded over three nights at the Philharmonie in Berlin. It does, however, provide a fitting close to the career of Claudio Abbado, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1990 until May of 2013, when the music here was recorded.

Salzburg Festival 2017: Mozart, Requiem in D minor, K. 626

Mozart’s Requiem – his final and unfinished masterpiece – is an extraordinary work. Discover the piece at the Salzburg Festival in the hands of conductor Teodor Currentzis, the ensemble musicAeterna, Anna Prohaska (soprano), Katharina Magiera (contralto), Mauro Peter (tenor), and Tareq Nazmi (bass). Few musical works are as steeped in legend as Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626. Commissioned anonymously by the eccentric count Franz von Walsegg, the funereal oeuvre would become Mozart’s last: when he died on December 5, 1791, only the Requiem aeternam and Kyrie movements were fully composed and orchestrated. Completed by other composers (Mozart’s student Franz Xaver Süssmayer in particular) using Mozart’s sketches and notes, the resulting work weaves the emotions we associate with death into a timeless musical exploration of every human being’s destiny, and constitutes a powerful final testament to its creator’s genius.

Hans Zimmer: Live in Prague

Hans Zimmer is one of the most successful film music composers working today. His multi-award winning career reaches back to the mid-eighties and he has developed close working relationships with renowned directors such as Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Michael Bay, Ron Howard, Gore Verbinski and Christopher Nolan. His credits include some of the biggest blockbuster movies of all time along with acclaimed TV series such as The Crown and Planet Earth II. This concert was filmed on 7th May 2016 in Prague during Hans Zimmer’s hugely successful European concert tour. Hans was accompanied by a band, orchestra and choir, 72 musicians in total, including guitarist Johnny Marr. The staging was spectacular with a ground breaking light show, stunning visuals and a state of the art sound system. Hans Zimmer performs on multiple instruments and gives introductory insights to many of the pieces during the concert. This show is a treat for lovers of both great music and great movies.
